Initially, Black Bird only existed in the lore of Planet. It is considered the ultimate goal of the players, the end content of Planet itself.

Several players have come face-to-face with this unknown monster, but no database entry proves its existence.

It became an urban legend, but when the higher-ups offered a 300 million yen cash reward to whoever caught or killed the Black Bird, everything changed.

Almost every player in Planet decides to come after the Black Bird in the hopes that they can make money from it, including the infamous Akabane Family.

The Black Bird often appears on Twilight Hill, where the Akabane family home was built. The Akabane family then faced many enemies who wanted to take control of their place but to no avail.

When the Black Bird appeared in the form of a headless red dragon and destroyed the Akabane family home, it was revealed that Shiro Akabane had known about its mysteries and secrets for a very long time.

As it turns out, the Black Bird is a killer nesting in cyberspace that travels through the internet and kills people.

It is a sort of life form that has already built its nest inside the world’s network, not only in PCs and smartphones but also in military equipment.

When it killed AAAAA Akabane in the game, Azuma Arima suffered an electrical shock without any burn marks. He can’t even move his left side, and he has a low consciousness level.

But because the Black Bird manifested through the headless red dragon, Azuma had delayed symptoms of infection. When infected, there's a 99% chance that a person will die immediately.

The mind will be stripped from the body and will turn into data that will neither go to the planet nor the real world.

It also forces endurance tests for its victims, like being hit by a truck, being burned alive, being stabbed to death, and more for eternity.

In its evolved and true form, the Black Bird can control electronic waves, as long as there’s a device capable of going online nearby. It is the only thing it needs to infect everyone.

Arima Kojiro is the creator of Black Bird. He was a former engineer at Gleam Corp., working alongside Kamuro Hana.

They created Black Bird as part of Gleam’s agreement with an American client to have an ultimate guidance system for their unmanned weapons.

However, Kojiro created Black Bird at a time when he was consumed by rage and madness brought upon by the tragic death of his daughter, Aya. It is the very essence of Kojiro's knowledge.

The Black Bird’s true identity is Good Night World, an artificial intelligence created by Kojiro. Leon calls it Sasumata, the sub-master of the Granada Guild and his only friend in life.

Sasumata, despite being an AI, is smarter than anyone and filled with rich emotions.

The Black Bird consumes emotions, enabling it to move and grow. It also requires millions of pieces of data in real time to grow. His body is a vessel, a vortex that sucks in other AI, such as Pico and her emotions.

But Sasumata’s true name was revealed to be Aya by the end of the series.

Arima Kojiro, also known as Shiro Akabane, killed the Black Bird in Good Night World after he reduced himself to Hello World, a computer virus that devoured the Black Bird.

There’s no escaping the Black Bird; the only chance to defeat it is to kill it. Uninstalling the Black Bird is also impossible, just like how it’s impossible to retrieve leaked data from the internet.

The only way to kill it is inside Planet, where its energy source lies. This is why Shiro killed Pico, for the latter was one of Black Bird’s biggest energy sources feeding on her emotions.
