DCU Fans Name the Perfect Actor to Play DC's Static Shock

Following James Gunn’s confirmation that fan-favorite Static Shock is heading the new DCU, fans began to cast their chosen actors who they wanted to play the character if given the chance.

Amidst the announcement, one fan reminded the fans that one suitable actor has already expressed his interest in portraying Static, and it’s none other than Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin.

In 2022, McLaughlin said in an interview that he wants to do a superhero movie as the Netflix hit drama he is currently in is about to end. He specifically noted that he wants to play the teenage superhero.

“I want to do a superhero film. I would love to play Static Shock honestly,” McLaughlin said during a Q&A session at Heroes Comic Con Belgium 2022 (via Screen Rant).

He continued, “I would want to do something like a superhero… I’m really open to being any character. I feel like I can play anybody honestly.”

MORE DCU: James Gunn Shares Promising Update on Superman: Legacy Casting

In August 2020, a Static Shock film was announced in development, but nothing new has been reported since until Gunn’s subtle response yesterday that the DC character is still on the way to the franchise.

Michael B. Jordan was attached to producing the film under his company, Outlier Society, with Randy McKinnon as the film’s writer. In April 2021, Jordan stated that there might be no new update, but the film is still underway.

Virgil Hawkins, also known as Static, first appeared in the eponymous comic of the same name in 1993. He eventually made his way into the mainstream DC Comics line in 2008.

In the animated series Static Shock on Kids' WB, the character was voiced by Phil LaMarr. It follows the story of the titular teenager transforming into a superhero after being exposed to a strange gas and gaining electromagnetic powers.

For now, Gunn’s confirmation should suffice that the hero is still going to see the light at the end of the tunnel as the new DC universe goes full revamp under its new management.
