The Star Wars franchise made several headline-worthy moves in 2023 but we can all agree that Daisy Ridley's return to a galaxy far, far away tops the list. In April, the actress announced at the Star Wars Celebration that she'll be reprising her role as Rey Skywalker in a film centered on the character establishing her own Jedi Order.

As it stands, key details about the film have yet to be announced and for the longest time, the actress tried her best not to address her surprising comeback. Now, it looks like Ridley is ready to talk about it, and in a new interview, she reveals what led to her decision to take on the project.

Speaking with AlloCiné, the sequel trilogy star reveals discussions with Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy happened "last minute", and when she was offered the project, it was an easy yes.

She said: "That was actually quite last minute. I was actually making my own film last year, and Kathy Kennedy said she wanted to have breakfast. And I thought we were just having breakfast. So there I was, having my breakfast, and she goes ‘Oh, by the way, we might do another one.’ And I’m like ‘Ok…"

Daisy added: "So I thought about it for a little bit and once I knew what the story was and everything I knew it was something I really wanted to do. I think it’s a really fantastic exploration of the Star Wars world. It’s a really cool way of taking the story on in a bit of a different direction."

If you may recall, rumors surrounding Ridley's Star Wars comeback first emerged when the actress was spotted at the Lucasfilm headquarters in late 2022. She'd later confirm that she met with Kennedy but quickly dismissed her future involvement in the franchise.

It's evident that Lucasfilm wants to come back strong on the big screen, after years of drought and hopefully, they'll be able to replicate the success of their streaming offerings. More importantly, we're hopeful that Kennedy and company have learned from their mistakes in the sequels.

The yet-to-be-titled New Jedi Order movie is slated for release in theaters on May 22, 2026.
