As the debate about the use of AI in anime continues, this hasn’t stopped companies in the industry from experimenting and developing AI tech. Just recently, Cygames parent company CyberAgent launched a new Animation AI Lab.

This new division within the company aims to develop generative AI and language models to aid in animation production.

CyberAgent is far from the first company in the anime industry to work on generative AI. After all, we’ve already seen lots of companies experiment with or use AI tech for their releases.

AI continues to be a controversial topic online, especially among creative professionals. This is because the rise of generative AI technology has prompted fears among artists that they will soon be replaced.

This is a legitimate worry for many as companies are increasingly experimenting with AI to potentially replace artists, writers, and other professionals in the creative field.

Despite the pushback against AI from creators, companies continue to use AI in various works. For example, Netflix shared an animated short earlier this year that was produced in part with generative AI tech.

This short was made by Wit Studio, the well-known studio behind shows such as Ranking of Kings and Spy x Family. While the short was still made by animators, it featured AI-generated backgrounds.

Aside from Wit’s experiment, other companies have also tried using AI. There’s the Japanese audiobook company that used AI to record voice lines by a voice actor who has already passed away.

More recently, Shueisha was noticed to have used AI lettering in the English release of a new manga.

The latest AI-related development in the industry is Cygames’ parent company, CyberAgent, which recently launched a new Animation AI Lab.

Cygames is known by many for its video games, but the company has also worked on anime titles such as Uma Musume Pretty Derby. The company also collaborated with other studios on shows such as Akiba Maid War.

CyberAgent’s new Animation AI Lab will specifically aim to develop AI tech that can create backgrounds, animation, character images, and music for upcoming projects.

This AI Lab division will likely help in producing future Cygames anime projects.

Given the pushback against AI, there may be a strong reaction to this if a new project gets announced.

Aside from animation, CyberAgent also launched another AI Lab division, but this one is aimed at AI for games.
