The Black Panther 2 cast once shared in an interview on how ‘it is never black and white’ when it comes to the film’s script. Winston Duke reiterates calling the alleged villains as ‘antagonists’ instead, noting that everyone has their own motivations and morals to uphold, truly reflecting real life on screen, which is evident in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s new promotional clip where Namor’s ominous line teases how war in Wakanda would begin in the first place. In the clip, you can hear Namor (played by Tenoch Huerta) speaking to the queen as he is willing to fight for his kingdom, Atlantis, “I need to know if Wakanda is an ally or an enemy,” he tells her.
The new synopsis for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever reads: “Namor, king of a hidden undersea nation will alert Wakanda to a global threat and his disturbing plan to thwart it. It’ll cause the Wakandans [to] band together with the help of War Dog Nakia and Everett Ross and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda.”
Namor is the hybrid mutant son of an Atlantean and a human, and so the earth’s surface population has mixed feelings of his identity. But to Namor, his kingdom matters at a greater capacity. In the comics, Namor’s beef with Wakanda’s T’Challa has always stemmed from the simple fact that they are not [just] superheroes, they are kings who have their own kingdoms to protect. Since the sequel is set to also feature T'Challa's funeral in Wakanda, there is no mistake that Shuri and the Wakandans will have to face and defeat Namor, no matter his motive.
Namor has long hated the surface world, whether or not his father was human, Namor’s goal is simple—to ensure Atlantis becomes real-world power. There are speculations of groups in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (government-related or not) mining and destroying parts of the seas for their own selfish use to search for weapons and resources, thus, driving Namor to the surface, confront and seek justice. Whether or not Wakanda sides with the surface people or with Namor’s could only be answered once the film if officially released in theaters.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is set to premiere on November 11.
