If you're on the lookout for an action-packed Kdrama that will keep you on the edge of your seat, Ballerina does a pretty good job. With so many Kdramas getting adapted from a webtoon, many will want to know what Ballerina K-Drama movie's source is.
So was Director Lee Chung-hyun's Ballerina movie adapted from a manhwa or a webtoon? Here's what we know.
Is Ballerina Based on a Webtoon?
No, Ballerina Kdrama is not based on a webtoon. It was written and directed by Lee Chung-hyun, the same director responsible for the horror film The Call.
If you search online, however, you will be directed to another Kdrama based on a webtoon. Director Lee's Ballerina should not be confused with the K-Drama series, Navillera, which was about a ballerina too.
Navillera was released in 2021 and was directed by Han Dong-hwa. It was adapted from a webtoon of the same name written by Hun.
The Kdrama series followed the story of a retiree who decided to pursue his lifelong dream of learning ballet. He meets a young dancer, who he becomes close friends with.
On the other hand, Ballerina is far from a heartwarming story. Instead, it is an action film full of gore and blood as an ex-bodyguard seeks revenge for her friend's death.
Ballerina K-Drama Movie Premiere: How Was It Accepted By Viewers?
Although Ballerina came out on Netflix on October 6, 2023, it made its premiere at the 28th Busan International Film Festival in the Korean Cinema Today- Special Premiere section. The festival was held on October 5, 2023.
Ballerina has received a 100% approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes. The movie currently has five reviews on the site, which totals a rating of 7.3/10.

Will There Be a Ballerina Sequel?
Since Ballerina just came out, there is no word yet on whether a sequel will be made. The film had a satisfactory ending though so having a sequel might not be necessary anymore.
But considering that Ok-ju (played by Jeon Jong-seo) killed off the big boss, there's a lot of room for a potential sequel. Ok-ju could be hunted down by their other associates as they wonder who she is.
Another potential angle for a sequel is the notebook she found at Choi Pro's home (played by Kim Ji-hoon). She might look for Choi's other victims as she individually returns the USB to them so they can live their lives without worrying of being blackmailed.
Since the film is not based on a webtoon, it could easily be expanded by Director Lee. Then again, it could just be a one-and-done film by the director.
