We're all looking forward to Blue Beetle but is it joining the future of James Gunn's new DC Universe? Director Angel Manuel Soto has just confirmed that his upcoming superhero flick is part of DC Studios' slate and is currently expected to get at least two sequels.

Blue Beetle Director Confirms The Film's Place in the DCU

Angel Manuel Soto recently spoke to Total Film magazine where he confirmed that the plans for Blue Beetle have ties to DC Studios' original plans for the DCEU before the Warner Bros. Discovery merger (via GamesRadar).

"We are part of the universe, we are part of the world, we are part of the plans that they have been creating for the future instalments of the DCU," Soto said.

He also revealed that Blue Beetle is very much a part of the new slate of films being planned by James Gunn's DC Studios.

"But we are not tied to all the films from the past," Soto said. "Yes, our movie lives in the world where superheroes exist. But that doesn't mean that a certain event, or certain alliance, or certain things from the past dictate where our film is going."

He continued by pointing out that they already have plans for sequels in the future.

"Our first movie, the way we wanted to do it, was always with the mentality that we wanted to do two more, at least," Soto said. "And taking the traditional three-act structure of a story, we wanted our first movie to practically be the first act of a saga."

Blue Beetle will star Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes aka Blue Beetle. The film will also feature Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez.

Blue Beetle will hit theaters on August 18, 2023.
