The first season of Andor took three years to film, considering how post-production needs extensive work, as well as the situation with the ongoing pandemic, and it looks like the same thing will be the case for Andor Season 2, which, as Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy said, will be around the same schedule.
Speaking with Collider, Tony Gilroy had already previously announced their date prediction of Andor season 2’s premiere date, as well as how long before Andor Season 2 comes out on Disney+. It was ahead of the Season 1 finale when Gilroy shared that season 2 will film until August 2023. Check out his full quote below:
“If past is predicate, and we do the same thing we did before, it’ll be on the same schedule. It will come out two years later. The only place you can accelerate the processes is in post, and the only way you can accelerate in post is with money and money is tight. So, I don’t really know, there would have to be some serious motivation next May or June or something. Someone would have to say, “Wow, we really need this and we’re willing to pay X.” Rogue One proved, if you throw money at it, you can do post really, really fast. It’s just very, very, very expensive.”
Rogue One was the first Star Wars film to ever break from the franchise as it featured darker themes, which led to the success of its prequel series, Andor. In fact, it is exactly why it appealed to the audience to watch both, as it does not require viewers to be fans of the franchise to understand and enjoy it. Diego Luna (who plays Cassian Andor, the titular character) even ‘blamed’ Rogue One for its impact on the prequel series, Andor, seeing as both materials diverted from the typical Star Wars story.
With this, it looks like Andor Season 2 arrives on our screens in 2024 at the earliest.
