There were a lot of awesome surprises in the Ahsoka trailer. For instance, fans were delighted to see Professor Huyang and hear David Tennant's voice all over again. However, it was lightsabers that had most fans talking, specifically the orange ones wielded by the show's villains.
So was there a mistake in the saturation of red lightsabers in the trailer? Dave Filoni has just confirmed that the orange lightsabers were orange for a reason.
In the Ahsoka teaser, new characters Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati are introduced and immediately confirmed to be the baddies, thanks to their dark suits and orange lightsabers. Some fans were quick to point out that the pair might not be evil since their weapons aren't red while others believed there was a mistake in the lighting.
Dave Filoni has since confirmed that those lightsabers are indeed orange and explained to Screenrant why he decided to the unusual hue.
"I made it a little bit more orange," Filoni said, noting that the interviewer was the first to mention it to him.
"That was very intentional. I didn't make them just a stark red," he added. Filoni then revealed why he chose orange instead.
"I remember as a kid that Vader's lightsaber kind of fluctuated from visual effects to being a little bit more orange. I didn't want to go straight up orange, but it's identifying a little bit of something to kids that they might not straight up be what you think they are in the beginning. It's good you caught that. Nothing is accidental," he said.
It's certainly an interesting choice for the lightsabers and the hue does make Baylan and Shin look more threatening. With that in mind, we can't wait to see more of the orange lightsabers when Ahsoka premieres in August.
Ahsoka has not yet been given an official release date. However, the show is already expected to premiere on Disney+ in August 2023.
