Zack Snyder recently opened up about the controversial "Martha" scene in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Despite teaming up the two iconic DC heroes in one film, it remained a divisive entry in the DCEU franchise since its release with one of the reasons being the infamous "Martha" scene.

Some fans believed that the two heroes becoming friendlier after realizing that their respective mothers are named Martha did not pay off in the execution of the scene and it became the subject of mockery.

During a recent interview, Snyder addressed the controversial "Martha" scene in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and shared how they came up with the moment when they were conceiving the film.

"When [screenwriter] Chris Terrio and I were talking about it, he said, 'You know that their mothers have the same name,' and I was like, 'Oh that's crazy, I never thought about that,'" he recalled.

"And he goes, 'Yeah, like imagine that Batman sees Superman as an alien, as a monster, but realizes that his dead mother has the same name as this thing that he considers nonhuman. Like, that's gonna get him.' And I'm like, 'That is gonna get him, that's amazing.'"

Snyder explained that mentioning "Martha" was the way for Superman to humanize himself in front of Batman as he is about to get killed.

"What else could he say to Batman, holding the Kryptonite spear about to plunge it into his heart — like, what is he gonna say to convince him that his love of humanity is as high as Batman's?" the director added.

"I mean, really, [Batman] could kill him in a second, like literally in a second, so that was why I was like, 'Ok well, he's gotta play every possible trick.'"

Whether you agree with Snyder's explanation or not, it shows that they put some thought into the idea and there was good intention in their rationale behind the "Martha" moment.

His recent comment could win some fans who did not like the scene initially and now understand his intention as we're several years away from its release and have more time to contemplate it.
