The release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods earlier this year ended up becoming a disappointment as it flopped at the box office and it also received mixed reviews from the critics. Its performance is from the success of the first film.

There are many factors to consider regarding why the sequel flopped at the box office. Now that we have seen The Flash's box office performance, one thing's for sure is that the audience right now doesn't have strong enthusiasm for DC as it is heading to a reboot.

Obviously, it's not the kind of results that the studio, filmmakers, and cast are hoping for, especially since the first film was a solid hit and there was an expectation that the sequel will be able to replicate the success.

Now that months have passed since the film was released, its main star is now getting candid about his thoughts regarding its disappointing results.

In an interview with TheFilmUp Podcast (via The Direct), Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi looked back on the sequel's divisive reception and expressed his disappointment with the reactions that it got from the critics.

"But listen, as an experience, I really enjoyed making that movie and I really enjoyed playing that part. I don’t know what the future holds for it all because, unfortunately, the second movie was not as well-received," he said.

"I mean, the audience score is still quite good, but the critic score was, I don’t know, very oddly and perplexingly low and people were insanely unkind."

While the actor iterated that the film wasn't a "masterpiece" in his view, he had a wonderful experience working on the film and believed that they made a great movie when he first watched it before it got eviscerated by the critics.

He added, "I’ve been a part of things, and, as much as I wish that they were good, I know that they’re ok, I know that they missed a lot. And I’m not saying that Shazam! Fury of the Gods is some perfect Orson Welles-masterpiece, it’s a good darn movie."

"When I watched it, normally I’m super self-conscious, and I still am, I’ll watch something and I’m like ‘Zach, your posture is horrible,’ and I can’t stop picking myself apart. And I remember watching the first screening that I saw of Fury of the Gods and I was like ‘We made a really fun movie!’"

As the star of the film, it is understandable to hear Levi's disappointment over the reception that it got since it would mark a stain on his legacy as the character and it also puts down any hope that he will reprise the role again in the future.

As we've seen in the history of movies for decades now, this is an unfortunate situation that some films always face and, sometimes, it is a baffling scenario that it is out of control even if you have a different feeling from it. All you can do at this point is move on and hope for the best in the future.
