X-Men Director Casts Doubt on R-Rated Star Wars Movie

One of the Star Wars projects that was famously shelved is the Boba Fett project which was supposed to be part of the anthology films that is in line with Rogue One and Solo and outside of the sequel trilogy.

However, the project ended up getting retooled into a TV series that is part of the "MandoVerse" titled The Book of Boba Fett which ended up getting mixed responses due to its lack of focus on the titular bounty hunter and reliance on connecting to The Mandalorian.

Since the project's cancellation, we've been hearing some details about what the film would have been and one of the things that we learned is that they were planning for it to be a Western-type of movie that is potentially R-rated.

Several fans have lamented about this missed opportunity to tackle the fan-favorite bounty hunter's solo adventure and they argued that it would have been awesome to see Boba Fett get involved in R-rated action sequences.

Simon Kinberg Doesn't Believe in R-Rated Star Wars Movie

In an interview with Polygon, Simon Kinberg, who is known for writing the X-Men films and helmed the critically-panned Dark Phoenix, opened up about the time when he was attached to write the Boba Fett movie.

He shared that they were planning to tonally make it R-rated similar to Logan, but he cast doubt on the idea that they were ever going to make a Star Wars movie that is R-rated.

"I was gonna write the Boba Fett movie. I mean, it’s all pretty sci-fi, but I think “hard” is the right word. Tonally like Logan. On the edge of R-rated, though I don’t think you’d have a Star Wars movie that could be R-rated," he said.

At this point, considering that the franchise is owned by Disney, Kinberg might be right it is highly unlikely that they'll ever do a Star Wars movie that is R-rated which would have been an interesting proposition if they really want to push the boundaries.

The closest that we got so far is Andor which is arguably the grittiest and darkest route that the Star Wars franchise has taken, but they were also still toying within the PG-13 spectrum since there are limitations on the showcase of violence.

At the end of the day, the rating or tone of the story doesn't matter that much as what only matters usually is if the audience cares about whether they are invested in the story and the characters regardless of being R-rated or not.

The franchise is also always intended as a more family-friendly property from the beginning when George Lucas conceived it so it is more surprising if they actually go on the R-rated territory.
