What's the Importance of the Blue Spider Lily in Demon Slayer?
The blue spider lily is the most important flower in the world for Muzan Kibutsuji.
It is Muzan’s only hope to be able to walk under the sunlight again, perfect himself, and even attain complete immortality.
Muzan is an all-powerful entity, a demon with the ability to destroy anything or anybody in an instant.
The problem is that, like all vintage vampires, he is vulnerable to the sun's rays.
It is blasphemy for someone as powerful as Muzan to be afraid of the sun.
The fact that humans have no issue strolling in the sun only adds insult to injury.
Muzan, of all people, is unable to do this one simple thing, which severely bruises his ego as the most superior being on the planet.
But, let's face it, he is to blame for the difficulties in his demonic life.
What's the Story Behind Muzan and the Blue Spider Lily?
Let's go back in time to when Muzan was just a regular person. It all began with Muzan's birth when his parents discovered he was a stillborn baby.
He was on the verge of being cremated by his own parents, yet he survived after he let out his first cry in the world.
The first cry has always been the most memorable, and Muzan remembers it as if it were yesterday.
As Muzan grew up, he became noticeably frail and sickly, having no chance to explore the world or socialize with other people.
He was slowly dying, and all his medications were ineffective.
Everyone even believed that Muzan’s life would be short-lived and that no one would be able to treat his miserable condition.
But one genius doctor from the Heian Period never stopped looking for ways to treat Muzan.
At this point, the brilliant doctor experimented with blue spider lilies and developed a test medicine.
He gave it to Muzan, who had a fit and murdered the brilliant doctor, assuming that his condition was only getting worse.
Contrary to Muzan's belief, he was improving as a result of the blue spider lilies.
Muzan even attained demonic powers and ascended to the status of an all-powerful being.
However, the blue spider lilies have two side effects: the first is that Muzan will be weak to sunlight, and the second is that he will need to consume human flesh.
From here on, Muzan exhausted all of his resources just to find the blue spider lilies and complete his treatment.
The problem is that he doesn’t know where to acquire it, for the only person in the world who knows where it is has been killed by him!
Truly, karma is faster than Muzan thinks!

Where Is the Rare Blue Spider Lily?
It is said that the blue spider lilies were found near the grave of Uta, Yoriichi’s wife.
This is a direct reference to the red spider lilies often found near graveyards in Japan.
If you’re familiar with the symbolism of the red spider lily in anime, you know for sure that it represents a bad omen.
It embodies death, loss, grief, and even separation. Its reddish color is said to be the result of the blood it extracts from the graveyard! Yikes!
Anyway, rumor has it that the Kamado family knows its whereabouts, and it is a family secret passed down to its later generations.
Tanjiro even saw it once when he was just a young boy, and her mother was the person who showed it to him.
Out of Tanjiro’s siblings, he was the only one able to witness the blue spider lilies in bloom.
This has been proven after this specific memory of him was shown in one of his fights.

So, Will Muzan Ever Find the Blue Spider Lily?
No, Muzan never found the blue spider lily, despite his best efforts. Even if he created an army of demons and ordered the upper demon moons to look for it, Muzan never found it. Why?
The blue spider lilies only bloom once or three times a year! It also blooms and closes in an instant!
Worse, the blue spider lilies only bloom in the morning, under direct sunlight!
The flowers are also very sensitive to all external factors that affect them, including the weather.
It also withers quickly, so Inosuke’s descendant in the future, Aoba Hashibira, can’t really study and take care of the remaining samples of the flower.
Once the flowers are picked from the ground, the blue spider lilies will not grow again. This is the worst thing ever, and Muzan has had enough.
So, when Muzan found out that Nezuko can walk in the sunlight, he wanted to use her demon body for his own personal gain.
In the end, Muzan abandoned his plan to look for the flowers and decided to pursue Nezuko instead.
