Classroom of the Elite has lots of characters both within and outside Class 1-D. One of the most intriguing characters outside Ayanokoji’s Class is Hiyori Shiina. Given her abilities, some may be wondering why Hiyori is in Class C in Classroom of the Elite.
There are some exceptions, but generally, Class A features the smartest and most capable students. Thus, it may be puzzling to some why Hiyori is where she is given her skills.

How Smart Is Hiyori Shiina?
Hiyori Shiina is a Class C student who has a bit of a loner streak as she’s often seen by herself. This is because Hiyori has a deep love for books, though no one in her class shares the same literary passion.
As she loves books, Hiyori can always be found in the library. Her love for books also translates to book smarts as Hiyori typically performs well academically in her class.
In addition to being a top student in her class, her abilities have also been recognized as she was tasked with co-leading her class when Kakeru Ryuuen was unavailable.
Her dynamic with Kakeru is also an interesting part of her characterization. They’re not particularly close, though they do respect each other's abilities, as well as their key roles in the class.
Classroom of the Elite: What Is Hiyori and Ayanokoji’s Relationship?
What is clear is that Hiyori is close to Kiyotaka Ayanokoji. After the two met in the school library, they soon began talking regularly with each other.
Hiyori is noted to think of Ayanokoji as a friend, even though they may end up on opposite sides of a conflict given the nature of the school and the fact that they’re in competing classes.

Why Is Hiyori in Class C in Classroom of the Elite? Popular Fan Theories
Based on her abilities and intellect, Hiyori seems to be a good fit for the A or B class, though she was instead assigned to Class 1-C.
It’s not explained why Hiyori is in Class C, though some Classroom of the Elite fans have theories. For instance, some think that her loner tendencies are a knock on her standing.
Some also think that her physical abilities may not be up to par with other students, though there are some story developments that other fans say dispel this theory.
Whatever the case may be, Hiyori will continue to play a role in both the anime and the light novel series.
