Sandra Oh has been on several shows and movies since her departure from Grey's Anatomy. Some of these shows have been a hit, while others missed the mark. In 2021, however, Oh starred in a new comedy-drama called The Chair.

Oh stars in the series as the English department head in a major US university. While there has been praise for the actress' stellar performance in this new role, the show's ratings weren't enough to convince Netflix to renew The Chair for another season.

Here's why.

When the first season of The Chair aired, it wasn't billed as a limited series so there was always the possibility of the show getting renewed for a second season. And even though Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim (played by Sandra Oh) was ousted from her position in the final episode, The Chair still managed to tie up most of its loose ends.

It's likely that the show got canceled because its ratings didn't do so well. The only time the show got featured on the hourly global top 10 data was for one week. And just three weeks after the show got released, it already exited the top 10 list.

In an interview with Variety, Oh put doubt on whether the show would be renewed. She said:

“No one’s called me, so I’m guessing that’s not happening. I would have loved it, because I just thought that there was so much material there to potentially explore. Because the setting and the characters were established… I’m just happy that it happened, it was a great experience. But I am sad that it’s over.”

Following this, showrunner Amanda Peet confirmed the sad news to reporters at the TCA's in January 2023: the show had been canceled.

"We weren't picked up. Sandra and I wish we had been."

The Chair was directed by Daniel Gray Longino.
