Why Avengers: Endgame Didn't Have Bigger Roles for Captain Marvel and Black Panther

Avengers: Endgame mostly delivered, giving fans a lot of action, comedy, drama, and, surprisingly enough, closure. The film definitely acts as a bookend for the current phase of the MCU, with many curious about how future films will be like. Many see characters like Black Panther and Captain Marvel as the franchise's future now so it was odd that they didn't get a lot of time in Endgame and Infinity War.

Speaking with The New York Times, co-writer Stephen McFeely simply stated that there wasn't enough time to adjust the script. After all, both Infinity War and Endgame had been in development for a long time. Black Panther hadn't even come out yet by the time these films were being made, while Captain Marvel was still being written. Pretty crazy huh?

"There wasn't a lot of time to adjust. It's not like we could say, 'Hurry, put Shuri in there.' We started [filming Infinity War and Endgame], and then Black Panther started, we're still going. They finish. We're still going."
"Same issue with Captain Marvel. We shot [Brie Larson] before she shot her movie. She's saying lines for a character 20 years after her origin story, which no one's written yet. It's just nuts. Certainly, Captain Marvel is in [Endgame] a little less than you would have thought. But that's not the story we're trying to tell — it's the original Avengers dealing with loss and coming to a conclusion, and she's the new, fresh blood."

Marvel and Kevin Feige have previously stated that Captain Marvel would be the face of the MCU now that certain characters have closed their chapters. Fans also feel like Spider-Man and Black Panther will also play huge roles from here on out, alongside Doctor Strange, The Eternals, and even Shang-Chi.

Avengers: Endgame is now showing in theaters.
