The recently released trailer for the upcoming third season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch revealed the surprising return of Asajj Ventress despite already being killed off in the show's timeline.

While fans are delighted to see the character again, it also poses a lot of questions on why she was brought back into action even though the character already died in the Dark Disciple novel.

The biggest question that fans also have regarding the character's surprise return is whether her death is now being retconned as a result of her reappearance in the show's upcoming season.

Despite having a significant presence in The Clone Wars, Asajj Ventress ultimately faced her death in the 2015 novel Dark Disciple, which is considered part of the official Star Wars canon.

She teamed up with Jedi Master Quinlan Vos on a mission to kill Count Dooku. During the course of the story, the two characters eventually fall in love.

However, their mission failed as Dooku was able to turn Vos into the dark side. Ventress was killed off by Dooku while she was attempting to turn Vos back to the light side, which ended up becoming successful.

The novel ended with Ventress' body being laid to rest by Vos on the planet Dathomir.

With Ventress' upcoming return in the third season of The Bad Batch, it now poses a question of whether her death in Dark Disciple is now being retconned.

In an interview with StarWars.com, The Bad Batch executive producer and supervising director Brad Rau didn't spoil the details of the circumstances of her return but he assured fans that her appearance will not conflict with Dark Disciple.

"We love Asajj Ventress. She’s a character that we’ve been wanting to tell more stories about," he said.

"We don't want to spoil anything, but want fans to know that any new storytelling with Ventress will align with the events of Star Wars: Dark Disciple."

It is interesting to see how Ventress' return will play out in the upcoming season whether her appearance is simply part of a flashback sequence or she was somehow resurrected.
