Characters Who Died on the Final Episode of Carnival Row

These characters didn’t make it out alive on Carnival Row:

Darius Prowell

Darius is one of Philo’s trusted allies. He used to be a soldier for the Burguish Military during the war, which is where he became infected with the Wolf's Curse. This allowed him to gain the ability to transform into a Marrok (or a werewolf).

Throughout the season, he forms a bond with Tourmaline, leading fans to wonder if a potential romance is coming. But in the end of the series, Darius is killed by the Sparas after trying to save Tourmaline. Both Philo and Tourmaline approach his dying body, with Tourmaline kissing his hand and Philo reminding Darius that they are soldiers of the Burge.

Kaine

Kaine was a member of the Black Raven and was one of Vignette’s closest allies. After the police killed his lover, he tries to make life better for the fae, even if it means having to cause destruction.

Kaine and Vignette had key roles in Leonora’s plan of attacking the Burgue Parliament. They were to offer themselves as bait to lead an angry Burguish mob to an open space where Leonora and her followers can ambush them from all directions.

But when Vignette sees the Sparas heading towards Tourmaline, she wanted to ditch the New Dawn’s plan and help Tourmaline instead. Kaine tries to stop her from abandoning the Raven again, but he ends up protecting Vignette from a gunshot. Vignette apologizes and bids farewell to a dying Kaine before heading to Tourmaline.

After Philo kills the Sparas, he announces the failure of the New Dawn’s plan to murder the Burgue Parliament. Initially, Leonora admits defeat and instructs her followers to hide for a while because they may have “lost the battle, but not the war”.

However, she is intercepted by Agreus, who pointed a gun towards her and tells her that she lost. Leonora instead stabs herself in the neck, but not before reminding Agreus that the seeds of revolution have been sown.

Characters Who Died on Carnival Row Season 2

Not everyone is safe on Carnival Row. As mentioned earlier, the series killed off a bunch of major characters on its final season even before the final episode aired. It’s worthy to mention these characters’ deaths as well:

Sophie Longerbane

Sophie Longerbane was a game player in Carnival Row, stirring up the politics in the series. Part of her act was appearing as an ally to Jonah Breakspear, her half-brother and lover. But Sophie wanted to become Chancellor herself and return the fae to their home: Tirnanoc.

Unfortunately for Sophie, Jonah acquires intelligence of her betrayal. He then proposed a marriage to Sophie, but she declined, which confirmed his suspicions about her. Sophie was then sent to jail to be sentenced for treason.

Sophie was an interesting character. Publicly, she despised the fae for political reasons. But behind all that, she had a soft heart towards them. She developed close relations with her Puck servant and cried when she witnessed how the Pix were dying of a disease.

In her final moments, Sophie shared a scene with Vignette at the Bleakness Keep, where she explains to her that all she wanted to do was make a difference after being silenced her whole life. Vignette realizes she had more in common with Sophie, and the two women bond in their shared hatred of men in power.

Sophie was then taken to the guillotine where she would be decapitated. Jonah refused to look at her, but Sophie’s final words go to Jonah, where she shouted “don’t you dare look away from me!”. The blades then fell upon her neck, with her head rolling (literally).

Jonah Breakspear

Jonah Breakspear (or should we say Jonah “Longerbane”?), was a troubled young man who often visited a faerie brothel on the Row. After his legal father, Absalom Breakspear, died, Jonah immediately became Chancellor of the Burgue. Jonah initially did not want to have anything to do with politics, until he met Sophie, who convinced him that he was destined for greater things.

Throughout the final season though, Jonah becomes destructive and ambitious, which led him to execute a group of fauns and implement laws detrimental to the fae to show everyone who was in power. Shortly after Sophie’s execution, a Sparas monster appears, with the creature murdering Jonah (instant karma right there).

Ezra Spurnrose

When Imogen Spurnose, Ezra’s sister, leaves with Agreus, Ezra desperately tries to bring her back home, killing people along the way. Ezra arrives to Ragusa which led to his reunion with Imogen. His sister, however, tells him that if it were up to her, he would have been dead already.

The Pact later attacks Ragusa, and Ezra, Imogen, and Agreus try to escape. When Ezra spots a group of Pact soldiers heading their way, he tries to speak to them, hoping they will give them safe passage to the Burgue. However, Agreus and Imogen prevent him, with Agreus holding him down and Imogen covering his mouth.

Imogen seems to conclude that it would be better to kill Ezra, so she squeezes his nose too, and Ezra dies of suffocation. Later, after the New Dawn found them, Agreus and Imogen are forced to dump Ezra’s body into a mass grave that the New Dawn created. Before dumping his body, Imogen cries over Ezra and gives his dead body a hug.

Constable Berwick

Constable Berwick was one of Philo’s good friends in the Constabulary. He was one of the few officers who took their oaths seriously.

When the fae were on the way to the ships that would take them back to Tirnanoc, the Black Raven appeared and destroyed those ships. Police started shooting members of the Black Raven, and in the midst of the chaos, the Sparas appeared and started killing police officers.

Berwick tries to arrest a Black Raven member, but the Sparas massacres him. Philo then sees Berwick’s body and approaches him to mourn. Vignette sees Philo and informs him that they had to leave already. Philo initially ignores her, but later stands up and follows Vignettte, leaving Berwick’s body to rot.

Berwick was the only one in the squad who still treated Philo as a friend despite finding out he was half-fae. That good man certainly didn’t deserve a death by the Sparas.

Carnival Row Season 2 Ending

While Season 2 had quite the body count, the series did end on a high note. After the battle, characters who survived were able to move on with their lives. Millworthy started a street theater, Imogen and Agreus opened “Spurnrose and Astrayon Electric”, and Tourmaline and Vignette get married on Tirnanoc. As for Philo, he refused to become the Burgue’s next chancellor. While a lot of characters didn't make it out alive, it's a good thing those who did got the peace they wanted. It's not really Carnival Row without the surprising deaths anyway.
