Was The Promised Land Filmed in Denmark?

The Promised Land (2024), also known as Bastarden in Danish, was directed by Danish director Nikolaj Arcel (The Dark Tower, King's Game) and the movie's language is Danish and German.

It was, however only partly filmed in Denmark; its sets include more European locations.

The historical film is based on the life of Ludvig von Kahlen (portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen), an officer of humble birth, who returns to his native Denmark to settle down after retiring from 25 years of service in the German army.

Von Kahlen must now survive on a low pension, while his relocation in the plot of land he was given is hindered by Danish magistrate Frederik de Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg).

As a mainly Danish movie, The Promised Land (2024) was, of course, partly filmed in Denmark.

Unlike big American productions, which are often studio-filmed, many European movies opt for locations across the continent, though the country where filming takes place may not always be the country represented.

Early on, it was confirmed that The Promised Land (2024) would be filmed in Denmark, Germany, and Czechia.

The first two countries are hardly surprising as filming locations, given that Ludvig von Kahlen starts off serving in the German army, before retiring to his native Denmark.

So, where in The Czech Republic did filming take place, and which scenes feature Czech locations?

In 2022, when The Promised Land was still under production, it was revealed that some of its filming was taking place both in in Prague and other locations in the Czech Republic.

The Czech locations outside Prague largely represent the wilds of 18th-century Denmark, particularly Jutland, which the main character attempts to tame.
