While Tim Burton's adaptation of Wednesday highlights the titular member of the Addams family, there's one character that doesn't really get too much spotlight. We're talking about the ever-loyal, Frankenteinian butler of the Addams, Lurch. Even though Lurch isn't a blood relative of the family, he might as well be.

Lurch has been part of the original comic strip. In the cartoon and past film adaptations, we remember him as a towering figure with a deep, raspy voice that says "You rang?" In the Netflix adaptation, however, the character doesn't say anything.

To complicate things, there's a lot about Lurch that we don't know about. Here are some of the questions you may have about this character.

What Type of Monster Is Lurch on Wednesday?

Wednesday introduced us to a number of outcast species and monsters in their world. Despite this, the show doesn't give an explanation of what kind of monster Lurch is.

But throughout the years, Lurch has always been represented as a Frankenstein-like monster. While the past versions of Lurch were able to communicate with words, Burton's monster stays loyal to the fictional character and simply grunts and inarticulate moans.

Yet despite this, the family manages to understand each other. And we see this with Thing, who communicates through hand gestures; as well as Cousin Itt's chattering.

In Netflix's adaptation of Wednesday, the role of Lurch is played by actor George Burcea. Although Burcea has a height o 6'3", this isn't exactly enough to meet Lurch's 6'9" height. But then again, the rest of the main characters aren't exactly tall so this doesn't seem to be a problem.

Prior to Burcea, the role of Lurch was played by the following actors:

  • Ted Cassidy
  • Carel Struycken
  • Jim Cummings
  • John DeSantis
  • Conrad Vernon

Does Lurch Speak on Wednesday?

In previous The Addams Family movies, we heard Lurch ask the famous "you rang" line with his raspy voice. But on Netflix's Wednesday adaptation, the character barely says anything at all. In fact, we could only hear him grunt throughout the film.

This could be because Burton has decided to stay loyal to the source material. And since Lurch's character is a Frankenstein monster, it would make sense for this Lurch version to not say anything in the show.

Despite this, Burton has decided to pay tribute to Lurch's famous "you rang" line by letting someone else say it.

In the third episode of Wednesday, Wednesday rings a bell in the cafe to call for Tyler (played by Hunter Doohan) to come to take her order. He says "You rang?"

This is probably an effort to appease the fans of The Addams Family.

Wednesday is now streaming on Netflix.
