The Apothecary Diaries’ first season is over, and while it ended satisfyingly, fans still have questions. Among them is what exactly is the ox bezoar in The Apothecary Diaries?

The Apothecary Diaries Anime Ends with Maomao and Jinshi Moment
After wrapping up the storyline of Lakan and Fengxian, The Apothecary Diaries episode 24 also featured a tender moment between Maomao and Jinshi.
Near the end of the episode, Maomao tries on a dress given to her by Meimei while atop the palace walls. She then gets surprised by Jinshi, who makes his way there.
The two then talk about the recent events. At some point, Maomao realizes that her leg wound opened up again. As she tries to stitch it, Jinshi grabs her and leaps onto the ground.
While it’s a tender moment, in typical Maomao fashion, she undercuts the tension by asking for the ox bezoar Jinshi promised her.

What Is Ox Bezoar in The Apothecary Diaries?
Back in episode 19, Jinshi asked Maomao to investigate the link between mysterious events happening in the palace. To entice Maomao, Jinshi promised to give her an ox bezoar from the pharmacy.
A bezoar is a mass of undigested material that can be found trapped in the gastrointestinal system of a human or animal.
These can be made up of various materials such as fiber, seeds, hair, or other indigestible substances.
Before the advent of modern medicine, bezoar stones were believed to have medicinal properties. In traditional Chinese medicine, ox bezoar, in particular, is used to treat various diseases.
Meanwhile, other cultures had beliefs about bezoar stones having antitoxic properties.
Given its significance in traditional Chinese medicine, it makes sense why Maomao is keen to get her hands on one.

The Apothecary Diaries Will Return in Season 2
Maomao asking for the ox bezoar wasn’t the end of episode 24. The episode ended after showing Jinshi asking Maomao to help with another case.
Thus, Maomao and Jinshi’s story will continue in season 2, which was announced shortly after the finale.
Fans will have to wait a while though, as the new season is set to be released sometime in 2024.
