The Apothecary Diaries anime ended satisfyingly for many characters, but not Meimei. While it may not be apparent, The Apothecary Diaries Episode 24 missed a crucial Meimei and Lakan moment that hints at heartbreak.
Even before this episode, Meimei and Lakan being quite close to each other has been established. Based on the latest developments, it seems that Meimei is the only one to be somewhat disappointed.

Who is Meimei in The Apothecary Diaries?
While Maomao and Jinshi are the central characters of The Apothecary Diaries, the series features a dizzying array of side characters. One of the more interesting ones is Meimei of The Verdigris House.
Meimei is one of the Three Princess of Verdigris House, meaning she is one of the top-ranked courtesans of the brothel. The other two are Joka and Pairin, the latter being the love interest of Lihaku.
Even early into the anime, Meimei is shown to be close to Maomao. After all, she is one of Maomao’s adoptive sisters who helped raise her.
Meimei is a kind and gentle girl, though as with the other courtesans, she does have a more sly and cunning side which manifests at times.

Meimei and Lakan’s Relationship, Explained
While Meimei wasn't a major character in most of the first season, she finally had a bigger role in the last couple of episodes. That’s because it was revealed that Meimei and Lakan are quite close.
Back when Lakan used to visit Fengxian, Meimei was still a young girl. Lakan and Meimei used to play Go and Shogi with each other. This is the reason why Meimei has become an expert at these games.
Despite what happened to Fengxian, it seemed that Meimei still had warm feelings for Lakan as she still welcomed him in the Verdigris House.

Does Meimei Love Lakan in The Apothecary Diaries?
Meimei doesn’t outright say that she is in love with Lakan, though fans believe this to be the case.
Based on the events of Episode 24, some fans think that Meimei expected that she would be chosen by Lakan. The fact that she broke down in tears when Lakan chose Fengxian was also interpreted by others as heartbreak.
This is based on a line in the manga where Meimei says that she would’ve given her hopes up if Fengxian were honest with her feelings.
In the anime, she didn't mention this exact line, though she said something similar. Thus, fans think that this is an admission of Meimei’s romantic feelings for Lakan.
Even though it seems like a sad turn of events for Meimei, it’s a happy development for Lakan and Fengxian given the tragic turn of events that they’ve experienced.
