What Happened to Bubbles in Masters of the Air Ep 5?
With four episodes remaining, Masters of the Air episode 5 depicted a rather dark twist to the story of the men.
As Major Harry Crosby came back to the 100th Bomb Group's base for the next mission, he was promoted to group navigator thanks to his performance on the team.
His best friend, Lt. Bubbles Payne, congratulates him as they prepare to take off for their next mission.
Bubbles was relieved to find that Crosby had returned safely, considering that he nearly sent his wife a letter about his death. Thankfully, he didn't send it before his arrival.
Now, as the team leaves for their next destination, the catch here is that the squadron is taking on 13 new vehicles to fly off to their assignment. Crosby prayed for their safe return as he waited for their arrival at the base.
However, out of the 13 planes that traveled to Munster, only one had returned. Unfortunately, Bubbles was not the one who came back in one piece. Crosby's best friend has presumably died.

Is Bubbles Dead in the Apple TV+ Series?
One thing that Masters of the Air tends to end its episodes is by abruptly rolling onto the credits, not letting its viewers take in what had just happened in the episode.
In this case, Crosby went over to Bubbles' quarters after the news, feeling completely heartbroken over his death and guilt for thinking he didn't deserve his promotion.
Crosby sits there, reading Bubbles' heartfelt letter he had written to his wife when Crosby was initially thought to be dead:
"I wish more than anything it was [Crosby] sitting here instead of me," the letter said, "Then no one would have to write this letter."
The emotional final scene gets cut with Crosby crying over his loss, leaving the aftermath of what happened to the imagination of the audience.
