Renowned filmmaker Wes Anderson is easily one of the most acclaimed directors working today. Though recently, instead of talking about his latest film, Wes Anderson shared his love for the anime classic Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Anderson recently appeared as a guest in the French outlet Konbini Vidéo Club series. There, Anderson talked about some of his favorite films.

While he talked about a lot of classics, Anderson also picked out two anime DVDs, one of which is a classic Studio Ghibli film.

When classic Ghibli films are mentioned, most people would probably think of Hayao Miyazaki's works. But in the recent Vidéo Club episode, Anderson chose Only Yesterday by Isao Takahata as one of his two anime picks.

Anderson mentioned that Only Yesterday is quite different from other Ghibli movies, especially those done by Miyazaki. This is because the film’s story is something that will resonate more with adults.

The director also said that Takahata and Miyazaki had their own voices that are quite different from each other, though they are great complements within Studio Ghibli.

To end his quick talk on Ghibli, Anderson praised the studio, saying that Studio Ghibli’s body of work is “a treasure for cinema.”

Thanks to the incredible quality of Ghibli’s films, the studio’s works have become beloved all over the world.

While Anderson was effusive with his praise towards Ghibli, he also talked passionately about Neon Genesis Evangelion, albeit for a different reason.

Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno is a close friend of Hayao Miyazaki. After all, both directors worked together decades ago. Despite their friendship, their works could not be farther from each other.

This was reflected in Anderson’s appraisal of Neon Genesis Evangelion, which he considers a strange but praiseworthy series for its complexity and absorbing quality.

In fact, he said that he can see people becoming fanatics of Evangelion, enough that it becomes their religion.

While Evangelion probably won’t become an actual religion, Anderson’s thoughts on the series make a lot of sense.

After all, the series is complex yet engaging enough that it still has multitudes of fans throughout the world today.

Though Hideaki Anno probably won’t do another Evangelion project anytime soon, fans can check out Wes Anderson’s latest movie Asteroid City, as it’s now screening in selected cinemas across the US.
