Lots of anime characters have typical powers, be they super-strength or genius-level smarts. Meanwhile, some characters have truly unusual abilities. So, here are the weirdest superpowers in anime.

Given that there are just so many anime shows that feature characters that have unusual powers, this list features seven characters in popular shonen titles to narrow things down.

Moreover, while only one character per show is mentioned, an exception had to be made for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure given just how wild the powers are in the series.

Spoiler Warning: This article includes spoilers for the listed shows, so proceed with caution.

  1. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - Forever's Strength

Any weird anime power list won’t be complete without a JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure character, and what better way to start than with Forever and his stand called Strength.

Stardust Crusaders’ main characters have fairly normal abilities, except maybe for Joseph Joestar whose Hermit Purple requires him to break a camera or use other electronics.

On the flip side, the various villains of the week in the series have truly weird abilities, perhaps none more so than Forever the orangutan.

Aside from already being weird by being an orangutan, Forever’s stand is essentially a freighter ship that he can control and manipulate at will.

While stands were only introduced in Part 3, series creator Hirohiko Araki proved just how creative he can be even early on by making a stand an actual ship instead of having a more typical humanoid appearance.

  2. One Piece - Kelly Funk's Jacket Jacket Devil Fruit

One Piece is another massively popular shonen series with weird abilities. Luffy’s rubber stretching abilities aren’t that weird, though his future powers are quite unexpected.

Perhaps one of the series’ weirdest powers though is Kelly Funk’s Jacket Human ability that he got by eating the Jacket Jacket Devil Fruit.

Yes, it’s just as the name implies. With this power, Kelly Funk turns into a jacket that another person can wear. In jacket form, Kelly Funk can still move and talk.

While it may seem useless at first glance, Kelly Funk’s jacket ability is a potent combination with his brother Bobby Funk. That’s because Kelly Funk as a jacket enhances his brother’s physical abilities massively when he’s worn.

  3. Dragon Ball - Majin Buu's Candy Beam

Majin Buu is one of Dragon Ball’s most iconic characters, and fans know him best in his fearsome Kid Buu form. That’s because this form is Buu at his most powerful, enough that he almost succeeded in beating Goku.

Kid Buu’s powers aren’t weird, though his initial Majin Buu form no doubt has some unusual abilities. The most striking of which is the Candy Beam.

How it works is that Majin Buu fires a beam at his opponent, turning them into candy. This beam also has other modes like the Cookie Beam and Chocolate Beam.

This power is rather cute, even though it’s quite morbid if you think about it. In that sense, it’s the perfect power for Majin Buu as he’s basically a child-like being with incredible abilities.

  4. My Hero Academia - Mineta's Pop Off

Another series with weird powers is My Hero Academia. After all, while Deku’s inherited power is fairly standard, there are other characters like Best Jeanist with his ability to control fibers and Kyoka Jiro with her Earphone Jack.

One of the weirdest in the series is Minoru Mineta whose Quirk is called Pop Off. How it works is that Mineta can pop off pieces of his hair which are sticky purple balls.

With this, he can bind opponents as the balls are incredibly sticky. He can also use them as bouncing off points given that the adhesive effects don’t work on him.

What makes it weird is that these are effectively parts of his body, as shown by the fact that his scalp bleeds if he pops off too much.

It may seem like a weak ability, but Mineta is able to make it work thanks in part to his surprisingly high intellect.

  5. Naruto - Shino Aburame's Bugs

Naruto features a lot of cool abilities, though it also has its fair share of weird powers. Among these is Shino Aburame whose ability is to control bugs – the signature of the Aburame clan.

As is tradition with the clan, members are infused with insects called kikaichu at birth. These insects feed on the person’s chakra, though not enough to incapacitate them.

Instead of being harmful to the person, these insects become capable tools for them. For instance, Shino can use these bugs to create replicas of himself, trap enemies, and even gather information through them.

What makes it weird (and morbid) is the fact that each bug only has a lifespan of a few hours. This means new bugs are constantly being made inside Shino’s body.

This is no doubt a powerful ability, though it’s quite unnerving to think about a colony of insects living within your body.

  6. Jujutsu Kaisen - Kinji Hakari's Idle Death Gamble

Jujutsu Kaisen is an intriguing series when it comes to abilities. While there are characters with simple powers like Yuji Itadori, there are also a plethora of characters with weird and complex skills.

When it comes to complexity and sheer weirdness, Kinji Hakari takes the cake with his Idle Death Gamble Domain Expansion. That’s because this ability is incredibly difficult to explain to the point that most fans probably don’t know how it fully works.

This Domain is inspired by a pachinko game that’s themed after an in-universe romance manga series titled Private Pure Love Train.

As shown in Hakari’s fight against Hajime Kashimo, when this domain is activated, both fighters must participate in various scenarios based on the romance manga, with the goal of getting a jackpot by lining up three symbols.

In a way, you can think of it as a combination of a visual novel and a pachinko or slot machine.

Getting into the nitty-gritty of the game rules is complex, but what’s most important to note is that when a player hits a jackpot, they’ll receive unlimited cursed energy and reversed curse technique for four minutes and eleven seconds.

It’s no doubt a weird ability that’s difficult to wrap your head around, but thankfully, you don’t need to understand how it fully works to enjoy the Hakari and Hajime fight.

  7. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - Giorno's Gold Experience Requiem

We started with JoJo, so it’s fitting we end with another JoJo power. While not as unexpected as Strength, Giorno’s Gold Experience Requiem is weird in that it’s a difficult power to explain.

Giorno starts with just Gold Experience, a stand that lets him give life to inanimate objects, morphing them into a plant or animal. He can also give life to an already living being which can cause targets to experience a kind of time dilation.

Upon transforming into Gold Experience Requiem though, Giorno’s stand gains the ability called Return to Zero. It’s hard to explain, but it essentially reverses a target to zero, but not quite erasing them.

For some reason, this also meant that Giorno was able to trap Diavolo in a never-ending death spiral. Plus, Requiem also retains the previous stand’s life creation ability, albeit in a much more powerful version.

While it’s not as intricate as Hakari’s domain, it’s still hard to fully grasp, making it one of the weirdest abilities in the series.
