Watchmen: Regina King on Why She Trusts Damon Lindelof to Tackle Race Issues

It's no mystery that HBO's Watchmen is a very racially charged, political show, and with all the black exploitation happening onscreen, some are wondering if white showrunner Damon Lindelof is the right person to tackle such issues. As per lead star Regina King, she absolutely trusts Lindelof.

Talking to Watching Watchmen (via The Independent), King was asked about Lindelof, a white writer, tackling serious racial issues on Watchmen, and she says that she has come to trust Lindelof's work ethic. She says, "Sure, I asked questions about it with Damon after reading the first episode, but I never had any doubt that I was going to do it because I knew Damon was not going to tell the story irresponsibly. He's a collaborator – he told me very early on what the writing team was [and] the writers he was surrounding himself with, who were challenging him and would not allow him to irresponsibly tell a story like this."

For now, Hollywood seems to be playing a game of keep-up when it comes to evening out the playing field when it comes to directors. With the industry being mostly white male-dominated, there have been moves by studios to try to be more inclusive, and we're getting more and more diverse choices for directors by the year.

I can't speak for the black community, but I think there's a sincere portrayal of race issues in Watchmen, and it makes for a very interesting discussion. If King herself is backing Lindelof on the project, then maybe we should just trust her judgment as to both an artist and a person of color.

Catch Watchmen Sunday nights on HBO.
