Tony Gilroy Shoots Down Rumored Director's Cut of Rogue One

Rogue One remains one of the most acclaimed Star Wars films to date, especially in the Disney era of Lucasfilm. It even grossed more than a billion dollars despite not being part of a trilogy.

The film was so well-received that it spawned the spinoff series Andor centering on Diego Luna's Cassian Andor set years before the events of the movie. The show itself has also received acclaim and is considered one of the best Star Wars projects to date.

However, before the film arrived in theaters, it was also plagued with production issues behind-the-scenes as it had several weeks of reshoots months before its release under the supervision of Tony Gilroy, who is now the showrunner of Andor.

The trailers even gave us a glimpse of some of the scenes and shots that didn't make it in the final cut and this prompted fans' interest to see the director's cut version of the film.

You might be wondering, will we ever see a director's cut of Rogue One? Unfortunately, you have to get your hopes down as Gilroy shot down the possibility of such a version of the film coming into existence in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

"Uh, no. That was the absolute best possible version you could ever have. Oh my God. No. No," he said.

The Andor showrunner explained why the director's cut of Rogue One does not exist despite some of the fans clamoring about it.

"I’m not going to go into any more detail. But the more authority that you hear people talk about online about what happened in that movie, the less they know," Gilroy added.

"That’s all that needs to be said. Maybe someday... but no. That’s the absolute best version of that movie that you could possibly imagine in the time that was given."

Based on Gilroy's comments, it sounds like we won't ever see the so-called director's cut version of the film and we may just have to get used to the deleted scenes on home video for some sort of an extension of the film beyond the final cut.

Fortunately, we have Andor to enjoy for any content today that is a remnant of the film, and, who knows, the second season might feature more familiar characters from the film besides Cassian Andor.
