The 55-year-old started performing with her sisters as a group called The Braxtons, signed to Arista Records in the late 1980s.
They then got the attention of the producers Antonio "L.A." Reid and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. The group was later signed to LaFace Records.
In 1993, Braxton released her self-titled debut studio album, reaching the top of the Billboard 200 chart and selling 10 million copies worldwide.
Her songs "Another Sad Love Song" and "Breathe Again" also became international hits.

Toni Braxton's Health Scare
In an interview with Today, Braxton revealed that she almost skipped a doctor's appointment, which might have caused her life, because she felt fine.
The Grammy winner said the doctors recently discovered a blockage in the largest artery of her heart, which could have caused the deadliest type of heart attack called widowmaker if they hadn't immediately inserted a stent.
But before her appointment, she felt nothing besides chest pains, which she thought were just due to grief after the passing of her sister.

"I just thought it was just sadness," she said. "It turned out to be much more serious, and I just dismissed the signs ... and a lot of people tend to do that."
If she didn't meet her doctors, then, it could have led to something fatal.
"I would have had a massive heart attack and would not have survived," she continued.
Braxton has lupus, an autoimmune disease that attacks the body's healthy tissue. She believed that lupus was stressing her heart, causing the blockage in her artery.
