Todd McFarlane’s Spawn Reboot will be ‘Dark and Ugly’ with ‘No Joy’

Todd McFarlane has been making headlines thanks to his rants on the Venom movie, but besides his co-creation of the character, he's also working on a reboot for the Spawn franchise. With all the superhero films coming out today, McFarlane talks about what sets his upcoming movie apart from the others.

He tells Nerdist:

"There's no joy… There's gonna be no fun lines in it, and it's just gonna be this dark, ugly two hours' worth of movie, which is essentially what a lot of supernatural/horror movies are anyway. There's not a lot of funny in them. And that seems to be a weird hurdle for a lot of people in this city to get over because they sort of go into a superhero/Avengers default all the time."

I have to say with the upcoming Hellboy going for the dark/lighthearted tone, I'm thinking McFarlane's Spawn could be exactly what some comic book fans are looking for.

Despite the multiple ‘deaths' in Avengers: Infinity War, there's no doubt that the Marvel films are still on the more lighthearted side of the superhero genre. The DCEU tried to introduce some darker and more mature storytelling, but underperformance and studio meddling has given us messes of films like Justice League. Now they've gone full kid-friendly with their latest Aquaman.

Spawn will be directed by Todd McFarlane and stars Jamie Foxx as Spawn with Jeremy Renner as Twitch Williams. The film is set to come out this year, but seeing the scarcity of updates, we could see a release in 2020.
