Todd McFarlane Is Open To A Spawn Crossover With Marvel And DC

Todd McFarlane might be busy working on his Spawn live-action movie but the comic book writer is still open to a crossover with Spider-Man, Venom, and other major characters in Marvel and in DC.

The Venom comic book co-creator just recently spoke in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss the success of Sony's Venom comic book movie and the production of his own film, Spawn. During the interview, McFarlane admitted that he'd love to have a Spawn crossover with other familiar characters from both Marvel and DC, including everyone's favorite wall-crawler, Spider-Man, and everyone's favorite Symbiote, Venom.

"Every time there is a new editor at Marvel they phone, 'Oh, hey Todd. We'd like to do a cover,'" McFarlane explained during the interview."And it's like, 'Yes,' says Todd the artist. Comma. The problem is that I'm also the President of Image Comics. Which is, besides being the third biggest comic book company is also the direct competitor to Marvel and DC. So, I can't in good conscience do that. Since we started Image in 1992 I haven't drawn a page for either Marvel or DC. I'm the only one of the founders of Image that can say that, but I just can't as a President of one company do it for a direct competitor. It doesn't make sense to me."

Spawn, being a character outside Marvel and DC, has had an entire world to his own. However, while Marvel has never had a crossover comic book series with Image's Hellspawn, DC's had a few titles with Spawn before.

"Now, if you are asking me if you could do Spawn/Venom, okay," McFarlane said. "That's a different story now. That's different than saying 'Could we do a Venom cover?' So could I do Spawn/Batman? We did. So could I do Spawn/Spider-Man? Of course. Could we do Spawn/Venom? It'd be cool. But to just do those characters singular and me give them the artwork, I can't. I can't cross that road."

Having the characters meet on the big screen would also be an interesting development, though that would be an entirely different story in itself. After all, studios can get a bit iffy when it comes to their film rights.

Spawn is scheduled to release sometime in 2019.
