The wait for George R.R. Martin's Winds of Winter has gone on for so long that fans are convinced that it will never come out. What's funny is, Martin himself had promised last year that fans had permission to detain him if he wasn't done by a certain date—and that date is today.

Martin had written on his blog last year that if he wasn't done with Winds of Winter come New Zealand World Con 2020 (which was supposed to take place on July 29, 2020), he's given permission for fans to detain him until he was finished. This was what he wrote:

I tell you this — if I don't have THE WINDS OF WINTER in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for Worldcon, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I'm done.

Well, it's the 29th today, and we have yet to get any official update or teaser from Martin. While I'm almost sure we're not going to get anything from him, I'm going to wait until the end of the day for some kind of update. I'm not betting on a finished book though.

You'd think with all this quarantine and lockdown, Martin would have gotten something done, but at this point, I think fans are resigned to the idea that this book is going to come out anytime soon. Best we just forget about it and just be surprised when it does come out.

We don't know when The Winds of Winter releases, but everyone is hoping Martin gives us a significant update later in the day.
