The Yuzuki Family’s Four Sons is a new anime by studio Shuka of Durarara!!x2 and Natsume’s Book of Friends fame.

This series is based on the manga of the same name that won the Shogakukan Manga Award in 2021.

Thanks to the manga’s popularity coupled with its unique coming-of-age story, there was a lot of excitement among anime fans for its release. Sadly, the first episode was a disappointment based on the reactions online.

Many complained not about the show’s animation, but about the subtitles being of poor quality. Fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to air their complaints about the subtitles.

The first episode’s English subtitles on Crunchyroll suffered from numerous issues that made it hard to understand. These include overly literal translations, lack of punctuation, and numerous grammatical errors.

Because of this, fans believed that the subtitles were made using machine translation and weren’t edited by a Japanese-to-English human translator.

Soon after complaints flooded X and other platforms, Crunchyroll removed the show’s first episode from their platform.

As spotted by Anime News Network, the first episode was soon restored on the US website, but not in other regions. Despite becoming available again, the original subtitles that received complaints from fans were retained.

Crunchyroll has not addressed the subtitle issues that fans have raised so far. However, the complaints seem to have had an effect as the show is no longer being promoted on the show’s Fall 2023 Anime page.

For now, there’s no word yet on whether these subtitle issues will be fixed. They will likely be fixed soon though given the number of complaints that the episode received.

In the meantime, The Yuzuki Family’s Four Sons is available in selected Asian countries through Ani-One. Based on fan reactions, the Ani-One release comes with better English subtitles.
