Henry Cavill has left his role as Geralt of Rivia, starting in The Witcher Season 4.

Fans will last see him in the third season, but it's a puzzle to many why showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich didn't end the series yet and instead opted for a recast.

Liam Hemsworth will replace Cavill as Geralt in the series next season. Though no official reason has been provided, Hissrich revealed the real reason behind The Witcher recast.

The Reason Behind Henry Cavill's Recasting in The Witcher

In an interview with Total Film via Slash Film, Hissrich explained why they decided to recast Geralt and continue the show after the upcoming third season.

"There's just too many stories left to tell," she said. "We had the choice to have Geralt exit and to end the show. (But] that's not something that we were willing to do."

The TV producer explained that they would be pulling away from the books if they replaced Geralt with another Witcher, and it was something not everyone wanted.

"We're all excited about Liam coming in. He's got enormous shoes to fill, but also has a lot of energy and a lot of excitement for it," she added. "It's obviously a brand-new chapter for us. And there's a lot of feelings involved."

Hissrich added that the show's cast and crew still enjoy working on the series. Hence, they decided to keep it going, albeit with another actor.

"But at the end of the day, we love what we're doing. So, we're gonna keep going," she stressed.

Henry Cavill Says Goodbye to Geralt of Rivia, The Witcher

Cavill has received critical acclaim from critics and fans alike for his incredible take on the monster hunter Geralt.

So, it was a surprise to many when he suddenly announced his show's departure after The Witcher Season 3.

According to reports via Screen Rant, his exit has something to do with the show "straying too far from its source material—Andrzej Sapkowski's books."

Cavill alleged he would reprise his role as Superman in the upcoming Warner Bros. film—the first time since 2017's Justice League.

However, DC Studios chief James Gunn cleared the 40-year-old actor wouldn't reprise his superhero role. Instead, he will direct Superman: Legacy, which will see "Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas," per Variety.
