The White Lotus Star Opens Up About Losing On A Marvel Role

Losing on auditions is no brainer for actors, especially if they are auditioning for major franchises like Marvel Studios or DC Universe. Haley Lu Richardson, who was last seen in season two of HBO’s The White Lotus, recalled her overwhelming auditions for superhero franchises.

Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Richardson revealed she tried her luck to bag some superhero roles, although she didn’t specify what they were. “No, I've done quite a few and they're just so much, you know what I mean?” she said.

She continued, “I did a test like a big screen test for a Marvel character, and there were real cameras there, and they did our hair, makeup, and stuff. But they just directed us in what kind of street clothes to wear, like what colors and stuff. We didn’t actually get in a superhero costume. But yeah, it’s just so overwhelming, because you’re just committing to something, and you haven’t even seen a script.”

The Split actress gets honest when she says that signing up for a superhero role in a widely known franchise means being part of it not just for one movie but for five or seven years.

“Yeah, and now it’s not even just five movies. It’s like seven years of literally whatever they want you for … It’s something that you could just trust and throw yourself into. But it is a lot.” Richardson said.

Last year, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the Edge of Seventeen star auditioned for the role of Batgirl, a part that eventually went to Leslie Grace. However, as the DCU goes through a full rebranding under James Gunn and Peter Safran, the movie was canceled.

“Getting the role would've been pretty cool, but I told myself that his email meant more to me than getting the role. So I tried, but I'm not Batgirl at the end of the day. I'm trying to think of what freaking superhero I can play now because aren't they all done already? Haven't they all been made?” Richardson told THR in 2022.

The White Lotus seasons 1 and 2 are streaming on HBO.
