The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been smashing a lot of box office records ever since its release nearly a month ago. There was no doubt at that point that it will become one of the biggest hits this year and now they crossed another major record that makes it official.
Variety has confirmed that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now part of the billion-dollar club as it has grossed $1.022 billion at the box office as of this weekend. It is the first film this year to achieve the milestone.
The exciting achievement happened just 26 days after its release in theaters, where it nabbed the record of having the biggest opening weekend for an animated film worldwide, beating the 2019 film Frozen II.
The Illumination/Nintendo animated film is now also the fifth film during the COVID-19 pandemic era that crossed the billion-dollar mark at the box office following Spider-Man: No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World Dominion, and Avatar: The Way of Water.
This is also yet again another sign that the theatrical business is alive again and this might not be the last time that we will witness a film this year that crosses the billion-dollar mark since there are still MCU, DC, and other franchise films that are set to release in the coming weeks and months.
The film was also able to achieve this milestone despite the mixed reviews from the critics. However, it received high audience scores and, as proven by the box office numbers, a lot of them tuned out to theaters and loved the film with the possibility of even re-watching it.
Illumination has also proven in the past with the Despicable Me/Minions films that they are able to cross the billion-dollar mark at the box office, but this is the first time that a film outside that franchise achieves the milestone and this is an indication that they'll likely do more Mario films in the future.
