The Suicide Squad’s James Gunn Was Also Offered Superman

Fans of geek media rejoiced when DC announced that former Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn would be directing The Suicide Squad, formerly known as Suicide Squad 2. The first film was always being compared to Guardians so getting the director of those first two films is a huge get for DC. While seeing him direct the film makes a ton of sense, it turns out that DC offered him something much bigger.

Apparently, he was offered a Superman film to direct, which he turned down for a second Suicide Squad movie.

The Hollywood Reporter states that Gunn was given a number of DC properties to choose from, with Superman being one of them. Considering the state of the character and rumors of Henry Cavill leaving alongside Ben Affleck, having Gunn direct it would have gotten people talking. It seems like we won't be getting a Superman film anytime soon, especially with Cavill now being busy with The Witcher for Netflix.

Gunn isn't the only acclaimed director who has been offered the Man of Steel to direct. Matthew Vaughn of Kingsman, Kick-Ass, and X-Men: First Class fame was offered the film a few years ago, which he confirmed in an interview. Nothing concrete seemed to come from it and now that Vaughn is working on more Kingsman films, it's safe to assume that things didn't move forward.

Shazam and Wonder Woman: 1984 are the next DC movies coming out this year and 2020 respectively, with The Batman, The Suicide Squad, and DC's Super Pets all confirmed for 2021 releases.
