Winter 23 has already seen lots of anime delays, and yet another show has been affected by recent events. The latest is The Misfit of Demon King Academy Season 2, which is now delayed until Spring 23.
This new season is set to air in a split-cour schedule, with the first half airing in Winter 23.
While the first couple of episodes aired without issues, the rest of the cour has been affected by COVID-related delays.
Winter 2023 Anime Delays
Anime delays aren’t a new thing, though the current season has been unprecedented in the number of anime that were delayed.
The first is NieR: Automata Ver1.1a, which was delayed after Episode 3 due to a rise in COVID cases among staff members.
The next anime to be affected is Ayakashi Triangle. Much like with Nier, this show’s postponement was blamed on COVID-19 cases spreading among staff members.
While the coronavirus is blamed in the official statements by the production committees, some theorized that mismanagement also had a hand in the fiasco. This is because Nier and Ayakashi are both Aniplex-produced shows.
A few weeks ago, interviews with ex-Aniplex staff became a major talking point among anime fans. This is because the ex-staff members mentioned how Aniplex is taking on too many shows that are resulting in delays.
Although not all the shows that were affected were produced by Aniplex. For instance, Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible was also delayed despite not being an Aniplex anime.
The Misfit of Demon King Academy is another one, as it is produced by Kadokawa.

The Misfit of Demon King Academy Season 2 Delayed, Return Date
The show’s first season aired back in the Summer 2020 season, and it was unaffected by production issues. But now, Season 2 has been delayed, with the postponement being blamed on COVID-19 cases.
While many countries have already gotten a good handle on COVID, it’s possible that these delays are due to the spike in COVID cases in China from late December to early January, as well as the recent Chinese New Year break.
This makes sense considering many anime shows outsource animation work to China along with other countries.
The announcement also mentioned that the first six episodes of the second season will be re-aired on Japanese TV networks beginning on February 18.
Given the episodes 1-6 reruns, it’s likely that The Misfit of Demon King Academy Season 2 will return in Spring 2023. Though an official announcement of its return date has yet to be revealed.
