The Marvels Plummets on Its Second Weekend Box Office
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, The Marvels dropped to 78% at its second weekend box office. It earned an estimated $10.2 million tied with the new horror film Thanksgiving.
The film now has the worst second weekend drop of all time for an MCU film as well as the worst for any superhero movie in history. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania previously held the record for having the worst second-weekend drop of any MCU film.
Considering that the highly-anticipated film The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes was released last weekend alongside other new releases, it felt inevitable that The Marvels' box office won't reignite on its second weekend and it will likely continue to do so in the coming weeks.
It is now expected to be a major box office flop which is a situation that Marvel Studios has never faced before to this extent and it is curious to see if they will reevaluate their future plans as a result of this unfortunate reception.
There are a lot of factors that we can consider regarding why the MCU film became such a massive box office misfire, but the most obvious reason at this point is the lack of a traditional marketing campaign since the cast members were absent during the majority of it.
This is going to be an interesting case study in the coming months since it is a strong indication that superhero fatigue might have already permutated the general audience or it could also just be a one-off situation.
