The Mandalorian Star Giancarlo Esposito Almost Turned Down Better Call Saul Return

Giancarlo Esposito might be best known as Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian right now but he has already made a name for himself in the hit show Breaking Bad. Although Gus Fring is one of his most beloved characters, Esposito has revealed that he didn't want to reprise the role in the spin-off series Better Call Saul.

Gustavo "Gus" Fring was originally introduced in Breaking Bad where he proved to be one of the most memorable characters in the hit show. So it only made sense that Giancarlo Esposito was asked to reprise the role in the prequel series. However, the Mandalorian actor revealed to GQ that he thought about turning down the offer.

"Big decision for me to make. I felt like I was going through the same dance, and I hope I didn't stress anyone out at Buena Vista Productions of Vince. But, I felt like, I didn't wanna go back," Esposito said. He then shared why he didn't want to return in Better Call Saul.

"In my brain, I was like, 'I can't mess with that guy. That guy is done, man. He's history. He's iconic. I don't wanna mess with him anymore,'" Esposito stated.

"I went, 'No, don't choose that. Choose to surpass that.' So, what are your obstacles? All of this was in my decision-making process. What can you do differently? How can you create a different Gus? It is before the time period of Breaking Bad. Okay, so he's more volatile, he's less controlled. All these things went into the basket and I said, 'Yes,'" he concluded.

We're certainly glad that Giancarlo Esposito ultimately decided to reprise his role as Gus Fring in Better Call Saul. With that in mind, we're eager to see Esposito in his future projects as well.

Giancarlo Esposito is expected to return as Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian Season 3 which is set to premiere on Disney+ on March 1, 2023.
