Ever since Lucasfilm announced The Mandalorian & Grogu movie earlier this week, fans have been wondering whether it was an indication that the fourth season of the series is no longer happening.

So far, the studio and Disney+ remain mum on the future of the series in the aftermath of the movie announcement.

A lot of fans have presumed that the upcoming movie is going to be the streamlined version of the planned fourth season given the lack of updates regarding the fate of the main series.

Now, a new rumor has suggested that the series might still happen after all despite the movie announcement.

Insider MakingStarWars (via Bespin Bulletin) heard from their sources that Lucasfilm is still developing a fourth season of The Mandalorian concurrently with The Mandalorian & Grogu.

They explained that the fourth season is likely going to consist of six episodes (instead of the usual eight) and the movie will serve as its epic season finale.

"One of the concepts has come out of this, count this as a rumor for now, is that the plan was to do six episodes of Mando [season four] and to take the finale, what would’ve been the finale, the big two-parter, from the end of that and that’s being developed into the film," they said.

The insider warned their viewers to take the rumor with a grain of salt but "there’s a lot of signs that they are though."

Lucasfilm has still not commented on the future of the series after the announcement of the movie.

The possibility of continuing the series despite the development of the movie is a plausible idea since it is the most popular original series on Disney+ and they might want to continue its steam while fans are also waiting for the release of the film in theaters.

However, with the movie set to begin filming later this year presumably with the entire cast and crew of the series, they might not be able to have the time, commitment, and preparation needed to produce six episodes of television and they might be more concentrated on the movie.

For now, let's wait and see what Lucasfilm has in store for the future of the series and we might be hearing a confirmation regarding the potential fourth season in the coming months.
