The Lion King Prequel Will Explore Scar's Backstory

There is little doubt that Mufasa: The Lion King will be about Simba's father. However, Kelvin Harrison Jr. confirms that the upcoming Disney prequel will also explore the backstory of Mufasa's estranged brother Scar.

Kelvin Harrison Jr. has been confirmed to play Scar in Mufasa: The Lion King and he confirmed with Fandango that fans will get to learn more about the character in the prequel. Interestingly, Harrison revealed that Scar wasn't always evil.

"We're going to get to really get a backstory to Scar, and he is hilarious," he said. "He is still very, very spicy."

"He is also the sweetest young lion you also ever meet, too," Harrison added. "So, it's going to be fun seeing the relationship between Scar and Mufasa."

This is an interesting tease considering that both the animated film and its live-action remake only showed how Mufasa and Scar were already estranged. The prequel will undoubtedly confirm that the brothers did try to work on their relationship when they were younger.

Kelvin Harrison Jr. is the third actor to play Scar. The character was previously portrayed by Jeremy Irons in the animated film and Chiwetel Ejiofor took over in the live-action remake by Jon Favreau. Meanwhile, James Earl Jones will not return to reprise his role as Mufasa in the prequel and Aaron Pierre will take on the role next year.

Mufasa: The Lion King will be directed by Barry Jenkins and Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. will play Mufasa and Scar, respectively. They will be joined by Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, and John Kani, who will reprise their roles as Pumbaa, Timon, and Rafiki, respectively.

The Lion King prequel is currently in production. The film is currently scheduled for theatrical release on July 5, 2024.
