The Last of Us Star Shockingly Confesses The Series Was A ‘Risky’ Career Move

Let’s face it: video game adaptations rarely receive acclaimed awards for its TV transformation, however, showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin break the video game curse with the garnered success of The Last of Us as an HBO series. Notably, fans were not entirely on board with the whole idea at first, and shockingly enough, not even one of The Last of Us stars: Bella Ramsey.

Before The Last of Us came to fruition, Ramsey was known for their role as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones. Seeing the huge gap between being a prominent side character versus becoming the main protagonist of the show is a lot to take in for the 19-year-old, although this is not the only concern the Ellie actor faced.

“Signing on to a series is such a risk, because if I hate this, then I’m potentially tied into it for years, and I didn’t want to be tied to something I didn’t enjoy.” Ramsey confessed in a recent interview with GQ, “But I would honestly do this for years.”

To be fair, the actor had zero background on what the Naughty Dog video game was about. While Ramsey was picked among hundreds of candidates for Ellie’s role, the actor was actually encouraged to not play the game for the element of surprise and let them have their own spin in the role.

It is quite relieving to see that Ramsey had changed their mind in becoming Ellie. After all, the video game ran for two parts, and with The Last of Us Season 2 already greenlit by HBO, it’s only a matter of time before we most likely get to see Ramsey portray Ellie as an adult in the aftermath of The Last of Us Season 1’s ending.

The Last of Us Episode 6 will hit HBO Max on February 19, Sunday.
