Most of the creatives from The Last of Us Season 1 are expected to return for the second season, which includes series creators and executive producers Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin.

Following The Last of Us Season 2's announcement, Druckmann, who was also the writer and creative director of The Last of Us game, said (via Variety):

“I’m humbled, honored, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey. The collaboration with Craig Mazin, our incredible cast & crew, and HBO exceeded my already high expectations. Now we have the absolute pleasure of being able to do it again with season two! On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog & PlayStation, thank you!”

Additionally, Mazin said:

“I’m so grateful to Neil Druckmann and HBO for our partnership, and I’m even more grateful to the millions of people who have joined us on this journey. The audience has given us the chance to continue, and as a fan of the characters and world Neil and Naughty Dog created, I couldn’t be more ready to dive back in.”

The Last of Us Season 2 is expected to cover events in The Last of Us Part II. However, Mazin revealed to Esquire that he and Druckmann do not "feel constrained by the source material".

"This should be fairly obvious to anyone by now, but I don’t fear killing characters. But the important thing to note is that neither Neil nor I feel constrained by the source material."

Mazin also said that The Last of Us Season 2 "will be different" from The Last of Us Part II. He said (via Entertainment Weekly):

"It will be different just as this season was different [from the first game]. Sometimes it will be different radically, and sometimes it will be [barely] different at all. But it's going to be different and it will be its own thing. It won't be exactly like the game."
