Set for release in 2021, Chloe Zhao's Eternals will see the group reunite to protect Earth following the events of Avengers: Endgame. Since the 2019 film brought a huge ensemble and an epic story, how does Zhao plan to top that off?
In a recent interview on The Hollywood Reporter, Zhao talks about working on the Eternals. "I have such deep, strong, manga roots," the director says. "I brought some of that into Eternals. And I look forward to pushing more of that marriage of East and West."
Zhao also plans to push big thematic ideas. "How much further and bigger can we go after [Avengers:] Endgame?" asks Zhao. "Because I'm not just making the film as a director. I'm making the film as a fan."
The director also added that she was allowed the same creative freedom on Eternals, despite working with a much bigger budget than her smaller films. "I shot exactly the way I wanted to shoot," Zhao says. "On location. A lot of magic hour. Three-hundred-sixty degrees on the same camera as I did on Nomadland. Same rigs."
Zhao feels that it's a "bit surreal," saying that she's "lucky" in that Marvel wanted to "take risks and do something different."
In addition to doing something big and different, Eternals certainly showcases representation and diversity, with the film set to feature the first openly gay couple in the MCU.
Initially set for release in November, Eternals was pushed back to February 12, 2021.
