The Case Study of Vanitas Episode 18 Recap

Based on a beloved shonen manga of the same name, The Case Study of Vanitas follows Noe, a young vampire, and Vanitas, an overpowered human, as they grudgingly team up to rescue vampires from the corruption of their true name, while investigating disturbing mysteries in the vampire world.

To complicate matters, the enigmatic Vanitas makes life difficult for Noe, who, however, can't help being intrigued by his new companion. But as the two embark on occasionally hilarious adventures, there's still a shadow looming over their partnership. Noe, who narrates his story from a later time, reveals that he killed Vanitas at the end of their joint journey.

Attention: Spoilers below!

We are now halfway through The Case of Vanitas Part 2 and the atmosphere is increasingly tense. An uncharacteristically kind Vanitas confronts Jeanne, helping her out of her despair, and reassuring her that she can make her own decision about Chloé regardless of Ruthven's orders. Helping Chloé won't be possible without Vanitas' precious grimoire, so finding it becomes the most important goal in the episode.

Vanitas leaves this task to Dante, while he attempts to deactivate the Alternate Engine. A wounded Astolfo makes everyone's tasks harder, and a flashback finally explains the reasons for his cruelty. While still young, Astolfo disliked fighting, going so far as to befriend a young vampire. However, this vampire killed Astolfo's entire family in revenge for his own family's death at the hands of the paladins. This traumatic event left Astolfo trapped in a vicious cycle of hate that he cannot seem to break. Back in the present, he attacks both Jean-Jacques and Noé.

Jean-Jacques realizes that Chloé plans to destroy herself and the castle and tries to talk her out of it, causing her to regain some semblance of humanity. At that point, Vanitas and Jeanne arrive with the grimoire at hand. Naenia won't go without a fight, though, so we expect a lot of action in episode 19!
