The Case Study of Vanitas Episode 17 Recap
Based on a beloved shonen manga of the same name, The Case Study of Vanitas follows Noe, a young vampire, and Vanitas, an overpowered human, as they grudgingly team up to rescue vampires from the corruption of their true name, while investigating disturbing mysteries in the vampire world.
To complicate matters, the enigmatic Vanitas makes life difficult for Noe, who, however, can't help being intrigued by his new companion. But as the two embark on occasionally hilarious adventures, there's still a shadow looming over their partnership. Noe, who narrates his story from a later time, reveals that he killed Vanitas at the end of their joint journey.

True to its title, Episode 17 is a nightmarish one for most of the characters. Chloé, who appeared to be friendly with Naenia up until recently, reveals her true plans; having forced Naenia into a physical form, she attempts to kill her as revenge for corrupting Jean-Jacques and making him the Beast.
Naenia is thus revealed to be Queen Faustina, the first vampire of the Crimson Moon, and she does her best to repel Chloé just as Jean-Jacques attacks her in the form of the Beast. Gédauvan turns into a setting brought out straight from nightmares, with raging wolves attacking the villagers. Roland and his Chasseurs arrive and protect Gédauvan. Noé, Vanitas, and Roland reunite, with the latter agreeing that they should resolve the conflict in the least violent way possible.
Jeanne, also at the crime scene, is deeply conflicted. A flashback reveals that Ruthven turned her into a "bourreau," a tool that is not supposed to think, but only obey commands. This explains much of her previous passive behavior, and also makes us eager to see how she will act moving forward. Will she finally resolve to be freed from Ruthven's claws, or will her misplaced loyalty keep leading her moving on? Stay tuned to find out!
