The Acolyte Showrunner Teases Show Will Cater to Female Villains

The Acolyte is one of the most anticipated Star Wars shows right now given its mystery-thriller genre and its promising cast, which makes fans wonder what it will bring to the franchise.

Some may argue that villains are way more interesting than heroes because their backstories are more complex, and villains are not born but made.

In the past, female characters were rarely represented, let alone allowed to take on a villainous side. But given the current times, female villains are getting celebrated more than ever.

Given that nothing much has been revealed about The Acolyte, showrunner Leslye Headland shared more details about her upcoming Star Wars series with Empire Magazine.

During the Star Wars Celebration last month, Headland first described that her show has Frozen meets Kill Bill vibes, and now she has expanded on that description in her new interview.

“It is sort of a joke. But it was my elevator pitch to Kathy [Kennedy]: ‘I want to take that revisionist version of female villains that you see in fairy-tale media and tell it through that lens.” she said.

Headland then went on to explain that the upcoming project is set to focus on female villains, which is something that deeply resonates with her.

“When I was a young queer girl, I was just hanging out with Ursula the sea witch [from The Little Mermaid]. As a queer girl growing up, if you don’t identify with the heroes, and the villains show up and they’re all queer-coded, you’re like — yes, that’s me!” she underscored.

The showrunner continued, “As a queer filmmaker, you’re gonna see some camp. Inevitably! But I would say that tonally, our references are darker.”

Ahsoka stars Rosario Dawson, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo previously stated that the intergalactic franchise is leaning toward a bright future for female characters.

The Acolyte takes place 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace. It will explore these events, starting when a former padawan (Amandla Stenberg) reunites with her former master (Lee Jung-Jae).

The series is expected to feature Rebecca Henderson as Vernestra Rwoh, Dafne Keen as a half-alien, half-human, Jodie Turner-Smith as a Force-user who is neither a Sith nor a Jedi, and Manny Jacinto as a regular guy who gets caught up in Jedi business.

There are a few weeks left in the filming of the Star Wars series, which is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2024.
