That Star Wars Leia Hologram Just Got More Real

Have you ever wanted to have your own hologram when you saw that little surprise hidden within R2-D2? Many fans probably did way back when, and with technology already more advanced, it seems like a nice project worth exploring.

This is exactly what some physicists over at the Australian National University have done for futuristic 3D imaging. According to LiveScience, they even went so far as to create high-quality holographic images ever achieved to date.

In the long run, this suggests a potential leap in the 3D imaging technology and application. But lead researcher Lei Wang, Ph.D. suggests other uses for the new achievement.

"While research in holography plays an important role in the development of futuristic displays and augmented reality devices, today we are working on many other applications, such as ultrathin and lightweight optical devices for cameras and satellites."

The technology essentially takes into consideration the manipulation of light in 3D. it also makes use of nanomaterial for 3D projections, with very thin dimensions to create light-based and complexly manipulated images.

One of the project's goals is to improve and build on the current 2D imaging offered by computer screens. It also offers some new and innovative ways for camera use in the future or a boost for the kind of systems used in space missions. However, the project still has some ways to go in terms of enhancing holographic technologies, but this is a good concrete step towards that direction.

It's nice that the Star Wars hologram was a great peg to tapping the potentials of this project. Here's hoping that we'd get to see a concrete hologram-based tool in our lifetime.
