Taika Waititi's Akira Live-Action Remake Receives Promising Update

A few years ago, we learned that Taika Waititi was attached to direct the long-gestated live-action film adaptation of the anime classic Akira. However, since then, we haven't heard any details about the project and whether it will still happen given the lack of progress that we know of.

Now, we have a new update that suggests that the film might still happen after all. Deadline reporter Justin Kroll recently shared some details on Twitter about what he heard regarding the fate of Waititi's Star Wars project where he revealed that he is actually focusing right now on Akira and is expected to submit the script to the studio soon.

"Since everyone is wondering where his Star Wars film is, if I were a betting man my guess is Taika’s next movie is his Akira movie at WB, which he put on shelf to do [Thor:] L&T. He never left the film and word is script should be into studio soon," Kroll tweeted.

However, the reporter cautioned that nothing is guaranteed about the project as the film still has to go undergo the usual development process and it might take some time before it officially moves forward.

He added, "Again nothing set in stone as the film would go through regular process before greenlight including figuring out a budget but sounds like all his focus is on that project."

While nothing official has been set yet, it is still exciting nonetheless that the project is still in the works and fans are definitely curious to see how they'll adapt the beloved anime and manga into an American live-action film. As proven by most of his works, Waititi is a wonderful filmmaker and has the potential to deliver something special with this film.

For now, let's just wait and see whether this project will move forward sometime soon and if it is indeed Waititi's next feature film project in his pipeline.
