Thor: Ragnarok Director Taika Waititi in Talks to Direct Live-Action AKIRA

Hollywood's live-action take on the classic Japanese anime AKIRA has been through development hell but it looks like the project is moving forward, and Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi is already in talks to helm the film.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. is negotiating with Waititi to direct the film, which was almost made a few times over the past decade. Ruairi Robinson (The Last Days on Mars), the Hughes Brothers (The Book of Eli), and Jaume Collet-Serra (Non-Stop) were among the filmmkers who tried to develop a live-action AKIRA.

Leonardo DiCaprio will server as one of the producers for the film with his Appian Way partner Jennifer Davisson and Mad Chance's Andrew Lazar.

There's no word yet about when the live-action AKIRA will start shooting or how long the negotiations are between the studio and Waiti.

Given how good Thor: Ragnarok looks so far, I think the New Zealand-born filmmaker is a great choice to helm AKIRA.
